"100 Names" Project

Hello athletes, advocates and friends!

I'm grateful you’re here. You’re visiting this page because we need you.

Here’s our idea…

Each year, hundreds of thousands of Canadians dedicate years, even decades, to pursue competitive sport as a way of life: our kids, our friends, someone we know. Only a small handful become professional, with many retiring long before the age of 40. Some athletes build fulfilling lives beyond sport. For others, it becomes one of the most difficult periods they’ll ever face.

Life pressure is very real. Our world is going through massive change in the way we work, raise our families and manage ourselves through periods of uncertainty and change. Just a few choices or unforeseen circumstances can uproot our lives entirely, creating fear and instability for us and the people we care about.

So, how can you help? Here’s our "100 Names" vision in the works…

Our "100 Names" project is a tribute to 100 Canadian athletes who have passed away from adverse mental or emotional health conditions after sport. We want to honour these amazing humans and shine a spotlight on how athletes are finding ways to navigate from a high-pressure environment to a new, meaningful life path. Our goal is to partner with notable athletes and “athletes in the workforce” who can share their stories about how they continued life after sport (or are preparing to do so) and use these examples to help all Canadians who are struggling with major life change.

Here’s our vision structure:

Honour 100 Names → Partner with athletes, people, organizations who are supporting or advocating for athlete mental / emotional health → Create momentum that brings together a network of resources and supports that helps all Canadians develop the skills they need to navigate major change while preserving their sense of self, joy and purpose.

What does the launch look like?

A launch for Mental Health Month in May 2027 with (a few ideas):

  • A tribute honouring 100 Canadian athletes by sharing their stories through media, events and community engagement.
  • A roster of well-known “athletes in the workforce”, associations and more who can champion the cause and act as spokespeople and resources.
  • A public outreach, media and advocacy campaign to raise awareness and get the people engaged.
  • A platform for ongoing mental and emotional support for all Canadians to access.

What stage of the project are we at? The first!

This is where you come in. 100 Names is still an idea. You're here because we need your perspective. Are you willing to share your ideas -- thank you! Are you willing to get involved -- thank you! Know someone who’s working on something similar who may like to partner -- let us know!

Thanks for you interest in our project. Our world is becoming more divided each day. Let’s start bringing us back together…
